What is the best way to become a tiler?

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010 and filed under tiling training | 2 Comments »

I am a time served engineer currently working in an office environment and getting a bit bored of the daily grind. I have always wanted to run my own Business and thinking about looking into tiling. Just wondering if anyone could suggest the best way to get into this and point me in the right direction. I am from the north east of England and any training would need to be as flexible as possible to fit around work unitll I could set up properley

You cant get certified and I dont think theres any formal training for tilers. Its mostly on the job. You should practice or just accept small tiling jobs and get the hang of it as you work. Its quite simple really and I’ve done quite a few tiling projects around the house and at relatives houses just for fun. It turned out ok. Message me if you need more info or advise. Good luck

How to write a business plan?

Posted by admin on February 14th, 2010 and filed under tiling training | 1 Comment »

I work for a tile/ceramic company, doing retail (showroom based).
Basically, I’ve got to come up with stuff like providing better benefits to employees, types of training to provide, how to draw in more sales/customers etc. Any sort of ideas and help in any way will be very much appreciated.
I need to come up with a business plan within the next 2 days.
Hey Ray , thanks a bundle.
Great ideas, any more comes along please do add it on, thanks again

There are a number of awesome business plan books at your local library that will help you with the form (and samples) that will help you fill in the details. The problem with what benefits to provide to employees is that each has its cost which might not be approved by Management. Since I dont know what you have now, it’s hard to suggest what better would be. Ask the employees what they’d like to see? Personally I would love an employer to offer a match on a 401K plan, tuition reimbursement, disability insurance, and discount buying plans. In regards to training, send the retail staff out in the field with installers (and get those installers into the office) so each can see what it’s like on the other side. Any kind of trade publications and/or video training seminars would be great but don’t make it so employees have to do it on their own time. Take time with the employees so they get a better overview not only of their jobs but of the company. Now how to increase sales??? Definately get a referral program going for customers to have reason to spread the word about your company to others. Word of mouth is the cheapest possible form of advertising and most effective. Don’t forget to "tip" customers that refer others to you. If you dont have a website, get one and advertise it every where you can. Also, find other businesses that you can cross-refer to your clients and for them to refer to theirs. You dont want to work with competition but if you sell tile but not carpet, pair up with those who sell carpet but not tile. You get the point. There are lots of low cost ways to advertise your business. Check out the book (I found at library) called "Marketing without Money" by Nicholas E Bade. There are 300 tips on how to get your company name out there… surely a few will work for you. Does any of this help???

I have a tiny kitchen and $3000. How do I stretch my remodeling dollars?

I definitely need to put in a new sink and the floor is really crummy press-on tile. What else should be a priority for spending the money? Also, I don’t have any real training, but I’m good at reading directions and am pretty careful using chemicals, tools, etc. What should I do on my own? What jobs do I have to pay someone to do? Can you recommend any good sites or books I should read? Thanks!

You could refinish the cabinets, do the floor, get a new counter top and sink.

How can i learn how to do work around the house (tile, electic, etc..)?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under tiling training | 4 Comments »

I want to be able to do work around my house but I’m handy with fixing things and building furniture but when it comes to electic, tile, walls, etc i have no formal or informal training and i was wondering if there was a place or way to get (classes, training or business that take internes as silly as that sounds). I’m in my 20’s and already have a job but I feel it’s useful to learn.

You can learn a lot of basic skills by attending workshops at HD. They offer classes in a variety of home improvement areas. Others, such as electrical and plumbing, it’s best to work with a pro when you are learning. Some things, such as replacing a switch or a light fixture, are relatively. More complex tasks, such as running new circuits, require the knowledge of codes, etc. HD would be a good place to start. Hope this helps.
