How do I install ceramic tiling?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under tiling tools | 3 Comments »

I want to help someone install ceramic tiling on their indoor-outdoor porch, so temperatures are extreme. What tools do I need? Can I rent a tile cutter?

The "Do it yourself" website includes information on how to prepare the area and then do the installation including required tools.

Good luck.

How can i learn how to do work around the house (tile, electic, etc..)?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under tiling training | 4 Comments »

I want to be able to do work around my house but I’m handy with fixing things and building furniture but when it comes to electic, tile, walls, etc i have no formal or informal training and i was wondering if there was a place or way to get (classes, training or business that take internes as silly as that sounds). I’m in my 20’s and already have a job but I feel it’s useful to learn.

You can learn a lot of basic skills by attending workshops at HD. They offer classes in a variety of home improvement areas. Others, such as electrical and plumbing, it’s best to work with a pro when you are learning. Some things, such as replacing a switch or a light fixture, are relatively. More complex tasks, such as running new circuits, require the knowledge of codes, etc. HD would be a good place to start. Hope this helps.

what is the best way to start laying tile professionally? are there courses in the US to take?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under tiling courses | 2 Comments »

i want to learn a trade and this seems to be very logical. however, i don’t know if it would be more advantageous to work for someone and learn, or to take a course to get started. would a tile company take someone on their staff as an apprentice?

there are trade schools here that teach it like Devry or ITT.

once you go into business you have to get licensed and bonded and insured, so save your money for that

Any tips for grouting mosaic wall tiles?

Posted by admin on January 28th, 2010 and filed under tiling tips | 4 Comments »

We are about to embark on finally grouting our 10,000 plus mosaic tile design within a shower stall and are looking for tips. The tiles don’t all go the same direction. Should the grout consistency be as the box specifies or not?
Should the grout be wetter or dryer than what it says on the box because I am using it on wall opposed to a floor.

make it just a little bit wetter and work it in the cracks well wait about 5 minutes and wash with wet sponge until clean and shiny
