i am trying to make a mosaic without the cutting tiles tool because it is for my school project and i dont want to waste money on a tool that i use it only once.
You can use a bag as suggested but then you can t shape the tiles you want to "fit together." You can shape them w/ house pliers ( tricky but can be done)Or a small hammer to chip away edges .. Do it on cement not flooring or table top.. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AND GLOVES!! edges can be sharp.. Hone edges w/ a bit of sand paper or on the back of another tile or even on the cement as to take some sharpness off.. Bright shiny tile can really be razor sharp ( cut myself many times) so use caution. I can t stress this enough .A dust mask or keep your mouth closed because I ve had chips fly into my mouth.. GL
Our water system is from a drilled deep well which was hit by lightening several years ago causing significant damages when the surge then traveled through to our home. Ever since then we continue to experience an iron-like deposit on our shower stalls and faucets as well as porcelain sinks, washing machine etc. Most surface stains can be removed with VIM or other light abrasive cleaners or even CLR however we are unable to remove the stains that have developed on our shower stalls. Of course the tiles are white or cream so they show the stains even more so. We do not have an iron filter on our water treatment system as the water tests at low to no iron? yet we continue to develop these stains. I’m able to remove the surface buildup but there are residual stains left behind that I can’t seem to remove. I’ve tried VIM, bleach, CLR, KABOOM and numerous other acidic type cleaners.
Anyone know what this material actually is and how to remove it?? Much appreciated!!!
For one thing, I’d have my water re-tested. If it looks like iron, and stains like iron, it’s probably red-water iron in the water. There is a chemical called "Rust-Aid" which is sold at Home Depot, it’s used for power washing driveways. I’m sure that if you apply some of this full-strength to the stains, they’ll come off. Muriatic acid can be VERY dangerous to work with, the fumes are toxic and you can get a chemical burn if you get it on you – be extremely careful if you try using this. It’s really nothing more than diluted hydrochloric acid and is used for concrete cleaning, etching, etc.
I’m taking over a tiling job that is half completed, in the shower the last tiler left a rubbery membrane that is loosely stapled to the lower walls and floor. I don’t know if I’m to keep stapling through this stuff, or put "backer-board" on top of it (which would also include putting screw holes in it), or wheighing it down with tile (doubtful). Any advice, or tips on websites that have the answer would be much appreciated.
We just did this. What a pain. If you haven’t previously tiled, you’ll need to extend the drainpipe up about 3 inches. Lay the membrane over the flooring with a hole ever-so-slightly smaller than the drainpipe sticking out of the floor. Install the basic drain. Then you need to lay about 2-3 inches of cement over the membrane bringing it up to the top of the drain, but certainly not over it. Smooth it out with a slight slope torwards the drain pipe. Let it cure at least 24 hours. Then lay the mastik and tile over the concrete.
Removing the old tile is a tricky problem. First, how long has it been in place and what size is it ? Secondly, are you going to replace this tile with some other tile or wallcovering or do you want to finish and paint the drywall ? I will assume you are going to replace this tile with tile of a different style or color. I would begin at a point where the tile meets the wall, like a border, somewhere you can get a thin paint scraper worked in behind the tile. It is going to be a very slow process so be ready. Just start working the tile loose from there, one tile at a time. The face paper on the existing drywall will peel off with the old tile, but try to leave as much as possible.
GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!

The people before us put down ceramic tile over top vinyl flooring. As a result, most of the grout was cracked and several tiles were cracked in half. A lot of people renovate a house before resale with fixes that may not be done properly. Like many issues in our house, this floor was disgusting in the quality of the laying down.
